O mne/ About Me

Mgr. art. Simona Dobrowolská, born on 30.12.1985, originates from Košice but currently lives in Bratislava. In the beginnings, as a student, she completed her Erasmus mobility program at ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI L'Aquila in Italy, where she also participated in the SHOT OF EUROPE competition and exhibition at the Museo Muspac L´ Aquila (2007/2008). In 2011 under the supervision of Prof. Rudolf Sikora and Academic painter Zbynek Prokop she obtained her degree in Graphics and Experimental Studio at the Faculty of Arts, Technical University in Košice. At the same time, she completed an additional pedagogical education focused on the teaching of specialized subjects of pedagogy, psychology and didactics at the Faculty of Arts, Technical University in Košice (2008-2010).

The artist refers to herself as an experimental artist who has probably gone through all the art media: painting - combined techniques, oil, acrylic, assemblage, collage; photography – coloured photography, black and white photography and also inducing photos at home; plastics, sculptures, installations, objects; ceramics - utility and decorative. While studying at college, she swore to herself that she will not paint a single painting. "Unfortunately," she had to paint one due to requirements of the subject of Painting and this way the painting Madonna was created (now sold). Her other paintings originated at home in the artist's studio, especially during free weekends and holidays.

During the study, the artist devoted herself to conceptual creation with the theme of Icons of today (collages of pop - culture objects in the form of Saint Icons). This way she reflected the current society that worships mammons, desires to have and own as much as possible and desires to resemble an idol - Star). Another significant theme of her work was intimate, the theme of Tabu, which also included the theme of Acute constipation, which hurts people while traveling as a reaction to changing the environment. She considers that as a psychicological state that can not be referred as a disease, but rather as a state of mind and body.

An interesting subject of her work, which she dealt with in depth, is Family and Genetics - character and visual similarity among family members, along with Memories from the family circle, the storing of memories and the Perception of the seen. With the work Perception of the seen the artist finished her bachelor degree and the work Memories and fiction contributed to her successful graduation from Mgr. art. study. From these ideas, even the most powerful conceptual works in the form of glass objects have arisen.

Currently, besides painting, the artist is also devoted to the work of a fashion designer in the sport dance area. She designs and produces costumes and jerseys for competitions and modern gymnasts, figure skaters, street dance dancers and fitness dancers.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART CREATION:

The spectrum of author's creation is extensive. It is dedicated to painting, ceramics, photography, installation, creation of objects. The artist cleverly combines the variety of art media in installations such as the Perception of the seen or Memories and fiction.

The central theme of her work is family and memories. She deals with the privacy of her mind, with things that she remembers while trying to distinguish the fiction from real memories. In a subjective view, she assesses the similarity between family members and looks for family identity as a linking entity that should connect the diverse characters whose bond is in the genetic basis.

Another theme is pop-culture, from which she chooses the inspirations (idol of beauty, commercial fairy tale characters, mammon for pretty and expensive things, lust for beauty, etc.). Subsequently, those are idealized with exaggeration in similarly worshiped icons. With this creation of sacred idols, she passes smoothly into the thoughts of saints and God. Through them, the authors deals with the private question of faith. This topic is still open for the author.

A unifying point for her whole creation is inventiveness and the desire to experiment with material. Furthermore, to explore new possibilities (and ways) of self-realization and expression through new techniques. Her production can be divided into two distinct parts, namely conceptual and free creation. Conceptual creation does not seek to be esthetically attractive (installations, objects). It links to the author's private past in the form of family memories. Her free creation, on the other hand, encourages the audience to the esthetic perception of the beauty and tries to stimulate viewer's pleasant emotion through shapes and colors. The author’s artistic handwriting is unmistakable and exceptional, strongly relating to decorative and surrealistic subconscious symbolism.

Organized projects

Perception of the seen - 2015, objects (4pc) became part of the interior as a functional and at the same time esthetic element of the recently opened amusement and relaxation wellnes complex Thermal Park Šírava.

Bipolarity, ,, We and They " – 2015, small exhibition project aimed at minorities living in Slovakia. In connection with the idea of an exhibition, the Title Bipolarity refers to two poles between ,,We and THEY“. This exhibition is supported by the European Social funding as part of the national project KomPrax (Competence for Practice) organized by IUVENTA - Slovak Youth Institute and in the cooperation with Mgr. Mária Kováčová and OZ Ďakujeme-Paľikerav.
